Mercedes Operating Systems (IT question)

Anyone know what the basic operating system of the modern COMAND units are? Does mercedes build it's own entire operating system that's the backend for all of their car management software?

Typically, in my field, most smart devices that are basically mini or scaled down computers (complete with processor, memory, etc) are based on some sort of basic operating system. It's normally something linux based and free, and then they get their software on top of it. This is easy because there's already a good, proven OS that knows how to interact and utilize the hardware, and then they can just customize applications for it.

I ask, because it seems that Mercedes (and others) probably all develop their own OS, with some being better than others. If they don't all use some sort of common basis, it seems as though it would be a ton of R&D work that could be avoided. Anyone have any insight to this?

thanks for the info. It appears as though they're going to use QNX, which is a flavor (or reworking) of unix it seems. Anyone know how other MFR's do it?

Here's some QNX links:

QNX Realtime operating system (RTOS) software, development tools, and services for embedded applications.

QNX Neutrino RTOS v6.2 vs. RedHat Embedded Linux

QNX Neutrino RTOS Overview (the variant MB is using)

QNX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Now I've got to setup a virtual machine and see what this thing's all about. I've never used (or heard) of it before.

Mercedes does not build radios nor COMAND units.

In our two cars, one is Becker, the other Alpine.
