I picked up my 1991 300E in late June for $1,750. It had 147,000 miles, mechanically sound, good interior, bad clear coat on trunk deck. I didn't see anything in the price range of comparable quality. The usual suggestions of Toyota, Subaru, et al, were all more expensive. Safety was important to me and the car has that too.
We'll see about the cost of ownership going forward, but so far its not been bad. Brake pads, rotors, sensors and wheel bearings up front cost me about $200 in parts. It was all MB spec stuff. Seems very reasonable.
Certainly there are things that can jump up and bite you, but that's true on any car. My just previous car, a Maxima, had the ABS control unit go twice! Dealer cost for the part alone was over $2K. (Knocking wood)
All cars are pigs, some less than others. You spend your money and you take your chances. What I don't understand is my car sold for about $48K new. Current E320s are about the same. How do they do that?
