Why did MB get rid of the Mono wiper??

It didn't really occur to me until just the other day that Mercedes has discontinued the use of the mono wiper. Now I realize they haven't been using it for years (early 2000's). Needless to say that I don't own a MB any newer than a 90's car. But those mono wipers were ingenious, covered much more wiping area and are less distracting. People non MB oriented are still fascinated by my big huge blade on my C220. What was the reasoning to stop using it??

It was good design. But it was too expensive to produce, too expensive to repair, and the blades cost too much.... so it was dropped.

I always found them to be a huge distraction. Still, the wiping system today, of my w203 with rain sensor sucks. Never fast enough, rain sensor sweeps faster in light rain and slower or not fast enough in heavy. I would kill for an intermittent function just to avoid manually running them all the time.

Never had an issue with the rain sensor. What surprises me is that your car doesn't also have intermittent/manual wiper settings. Weird.

Because they perform poorly, i.e. don't really move the water off.

I had a mono wiper on my W124 and have one on my R129 ('01). They both worked quite well, IMO, and it's fun to see the startled look on a passenger the first time that single blade unparks and sweeps across the windscreen. The "bow tie" move at vertical is a picture of kinematics. Unnecessarily complex, of course, but effective and in typical MRZ engineering style, a whiz-bang detail.

It's like the pleasure I got when I realized the side mirrors on my W124 were assymmetrical; the left and right are different sizes and shapes. I was told there was an engineering reason for the difference that increased the rear vision. Whether or not that is the case, I thought it was cool that the engineers could overrule the designers.

That is what provides me a great deal of small pleasures from my Mercedes automobiles; finding a neatly engineered solution to a problem I didn't even realize existed.

There was dispute about it in W211 some time ago.
New dual wipers do cover bigger percentage of the windshield that the monoblade.
Move faster as well.
Both designs work for me quite well. In those 2-3 months when we have occasional rain.
