79 450SL - Help with Climate Control Sensor- New Dashboard Cap

Greetings - I purchased a new dashboard cap to sit on top of my cracked dashboard (a very common problem I am told from this era). Everything I have read says to pull the 2 hoses from the climate control sensor on the top of the dash so that a new hole can be drilled in the new cap. The problem is that under the hoses I have wires apparently soldered to the sensor...I called the manufacturer of the cap and they seem suprised too. Has anyone run across this or have suggestions? I will most likely let my mechanic do the work as the unit doesnt want to come apart where there is an apparent seam on the plastic, and I dont want to unsolder anything with the very tight wires...as I drop them into the dashboard never to bee seen again..
