Used car guidance

Hello folks. First post here. We own a 06 SLK 280 and its a fun car for the Wife. I have always been a gear head and think a nice used MB would be good to tinker around with. Problem is, as you already know, I don't have a clue as to what to avoid and what models to go after. Just looking for a third car to make small repairs to and keep running forever. Not a daily driver at all, in fact I'm only home 5-6 times a year.

Some of the cars I like the "appearance of" would be mid to late 80's 400 model SEL or the 89 560 SEC and always the 190 with ground effects. There seems to be plenty of cars in the marketplace but my concern would be some of the exotic suspension issues and wiring harness problems.

I sure could use a little help is a good sound car selection. My budget will be $7500 tops and I live in Georgia.

Wow. How much space is there on the internet? You can find a $7500 version of almost any model more than 10 years old. You got to narrow the search some. Sedan, roadster, big car, small car, coupe?

I'd go to Edmunds and stir the mouse for a couple of hours in the used Mercedes section and see what you like. Find four or five then come back on here and ask about them.

OK, let's start with a 1987 420 SEL. 87K miles on the clock. What do I look for as known issues with this car?
