Post Temp gauge climb and judder

In the Uk and we have a 1993 Mercedes E class. When in a queue the temp gauge starts to climb to above 80 oc and you can kind of 'smell the heat' coming from the engine. Wierdly it doesen't seem to do it all the time.. Also when it does happen the two "outer" face blowers (the one next to the passenger door and the one next to the driver door) will blow really hot air when the climate control gauge is set to cold but the two in the centre console above the gear lever will continue to blow cold air. There is not air con on the vehicle (despite something looking like an aircon compressor on the front right side of the engine).

Also when travelling down a straight road it will sometimes start to shake and judder as if the drive is being lost for a few seconds then everything will go ok. It can sometimes do this quite frequently but seems better after being run. It only gets used about once a week so can get quite a lot of leaves and stuff around the engine. Vehicle is manual.

Thanks for your help!!
