Question Very bad loss of power or missing?

I have an 02 e320 wagon, I will give all the details I know when this problem abruptly happened. I was gunning it around a corner in the rain, I had my plastic cover off from changing the oil, at high revs just before it was going to shift it hiccuped like the over rev sensor cut in, just a few 100 feet after that when I gave it throttle it acted like it was out of gas. If I backed of the peddle it would catch again for a minute and then either have a huge loss of power or act like it was out of gas again. It has consistently done this for about 3 days now, once even hiccuped again and went into limp mode with the "BAS/ESP" light coming on, so I had to pull over and turn the car off and restart it and it was back to the same erratic problem, that light went out. Never a check engine light through all of this though. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, John

Hi, John.

First things first. Please click the user cp link and add your vehicle and location to your profile as that is often useful information.

Second, you've posted a rather technical issue into the general forum, but generally you'll get more useful information if you post in the forum that is specific to your chassis, which is the W210. Scroll down to the sedans forum and you'll see it.

Third, the first step I would take is to check for codes. Codes can set even if you don't have a CEL, and they can be very instructive when you're chasing symptoms. Once you get codes you can search them on the forum or post in the 210 forum and the folks there will probably get you squared away.

(I won't comment on the advisability of gunning it around a corner in the rain...)

May be one of your cats- I have seen it when one gets clogged it will cause it to run bad and mis, making it basically un-driveable. The other maybe the MASS Airflow Sensor.

Agreed. Also check the throttle position sensor.

In the ML320, if you turn your wheel all the way to one side, then all the way to the other side-back and forth-the BAS/ESP light will go off.
I do not know if this will work on your mdel, but it is worth a try.
