question about service a

I have a 2009 mercedes c300 with only 5500 miles on it, and have owned it for exactly one year. the "service a" light came on and was told by my dealer that i needed to pay $300 to do this service. Im not real inclined to do this because it appears nothing more than an oil change. since i have few miles on it, i was wondering if i could take it to make local goodyear service or jiffy lube and just get a synthetic oil change for $50. also, if i could do this, would this remove the service a light? thanks.

You're correct, a service A is basically an oil change but they inspect a few other things and will address any recalls. Is it worth $300? Not if you can do the inspections and/or change the oil and filter. You can re-set the service reminder yourself but all cars have a different method. Ask on the W204 forum and someone should have a checklist so you'll know what to look for. and will know how to re-set the reminder. Personally, I'd avoid Goodyear and Jiffy Lube type places. Find a shop that works on Mercedes.

I asked my dealer the same question. He said you can change your own oil and filter, but if you have a major engine problem and there is not a mercedes filter in it, they would not cover the repairs under warranty.

Dealership or Mercedes indy. Not Jiffy Lube! $300 is about the price for an A service.
