Most reliable Benz gas models

I am looking to get a gasser mercedes daily driver but it seems by reading various forums that they overall much more troublesome than their diesel models. I like the diesels but I like how the gassers driver but want a model thats reliable. Currently have a toyota corolla as a daily driver, its been great and want something thats nicer than a corolla. What MB gasser models are reliable and overall a good model to own?

Sooooo broad a question. The most reliable would be a new 2009. How much are you looking to spend? How big a car do you need? Are you a DIYer?

I work on mercedes already so yeah I can do the work provided no special tool is needed. Not a big car but like the size of a w124/123. I dont want a new one since they designed so you can very little on them by yourself and have to bring it to the dealer for almost everything. My range in price is anywhere from 1k-6k.

Buy the one for $1000, spend $10,000 on necessary fixings and you are all set
Diesel is another story. The 30 years old models in pristine condition still sell for close to 10 grands.
$1000 300td might be worth putting money on restoration and serve you for next 20 years.

To me 124s are the gold standard - 10 years of production from 86 to 95, sedans, coupes, wagons, cabriolets, sixes, V8s, fairly easy to work on and lots of repair information available.

I was getting cramps with low leg room in W124, so this isn't for everybody.
IMHO the W210 present the best value on the market. You can buy gasser for less than 5 grands or turbo diesel for less than 8 grands.
Low money and beat 124 in every aspect.

The important thing to remember about Mercedes E-class is that 1995 was the last year of production. The subsequent model was made by some other company, a more short term thinking company, that: forgot to rust proof the cars, so they rust, and forgot to properly engineer the spring perches, so they collapse, and replaced the life-of-the-car, terrific feel recirculating ball steering system with a cheap consumable rack and pinion steering system that fails periodically and costs over a thousand to replace, and did away with the durable and repairable hydraulic transmission and replaced it with a frail, finicky and expensive electronic one, and did away with the $8 DIY OBDI diagnostic system and replaced with prohibitively expensive computer, etc. etc. And this is not to even mention the "styling problem". Apparently, in another cost saving move, the styling department was laid off in mid-project and someone, perhaps the night cleaning crew, drew in some round, bug-eye headlights, that are both incompatible with the rest of the car and unattractive in their own right. It's a sad story, all in all, but the good news is that there's no need to be victimized by it, with so many 124s still on the road.
