Hello again and Help

Yes I'm a VERY obvious first time MB owner because I posted a message with the wrong car model on it! I have a 1986 300E NOT 190E. The emblem fell of the back and I mistakenly posted the wrong model. Anyway, I have had the car for about three weeks and it has always taken about four starts to get it going. Now however it has stalled out entirely and will not start. I re-plugged using hotter copper NGK's. Spark is good, distributer and rotor ok, Checked air cleaner, some of the vacuum lies (hard to really check with starter fluid unless it starts) going to try and check fuel filter and fuel pump, fuel relay pressure regulator etc. Friend who is backyard mechanic, not an MB owner or expert by any means think the headgasket may need replaced thinking compression is lost. I really just want to get it going first and do the most expensive repairs a little later. I don't plan on driving it every day until she's really shipshape. I have a Volvo 940 that will probably be my workhorse car. If I can get that running! Anyway I'm a little panicky and afraid I got in over my head with the MB, I really like the car but by looking at all the posts they seem to be pretty quirky, complicated and difficult to correctly troubleshoot. ANY help is appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum. Could be something like an RPM sensor. Are you getting spark when you try and start the car.

You can check by connecting up a timing light and having someone try and start the car. If the light lights up, you are getting spark. If not, check the RPM sensor.

Yes I do have spark, we did the old screw driver in the spark plug socket trick and it flashed in timing with the distributer rotor. This morning it started after second try and ran for nearly one minute albeit pretty roughly. It would not re-start. I am going to try new spark plug wires next and a new fuel filter, maybe also the fuel relay if I can find where that is. Do you know of any repair or tear down manuals available? Thanks for all of the help and any other info that you may have
