Mobil 1 Transmission Fluid Question

I have a 2004 CLK320 with the 722.618 transmission. I have asked two dealers here, and I've emailed Mobil 1. Nobody has given me a definitive answer. Can anyone tell me whether or not this fluid will work with this transmission? If you read the spec on the bottle, it says it meets 236.1 (among many others). That should do it shouldn't it? Any clarity here would be appreciated. What I want to do is pull as much fluid from the trans as possible and replenish. Drive the car a bit, and repeat. Do that a few times and I should get a fairly clean oil change without having to have it flushed by a machine. I just had the filter replaced...now it's time to get as fresh of oil as possible. I am NOT paying $17 a litre from Mercedes. I was born at night...but not last night. Shoot...one of the dealers here charges that for BG fluid! Thanks guys.

I think you're wize not to flush it. Try a search on the W209 forum to see if someone has posted a sheet with compatble ATF. If you can't find it there, check the W210 forum because I know it's on there in the transmission sticky. You have the same engine that some of us do, but your tranny might be a newer generation 722.6xx.

NO.

236.1 DOES NOT MEET SPEC.

Minimum spec is 236.10, which comes after 236.9 and is not the same as 236.1 (which is before 236.3, 236.2, etc.). So you can use spec numbers equalling or higher than 236.10, but not lower.

There are other fluids out there, but NOT MOBIL1 or any flavor of Dexron.

Loubapache posted a pretty comprehensive list in the 210 forum of fluids that meet minimum spec, same transmission.

FWIW, you do need to drop the pan and clean it and change the filter. Flushing won't get rid of all the detritus that has accumulated there.

There is also a self-flushing technique you can use that is in the 210 stickies.

However, fluid as you note is expensive (shop around, different dealers charge different prices). So if you flush you have to buy LOTS more. 4L will be more than enough for a pan drop and filter change, then in 10,000 miles you can just drain and refill, which will get you to the 60% range or so. You can also submit some of the fluid at the 10K change to Blackstone and they will tell you the approximate wear characteristics and longevity.

I have read the suggested threads...and many more besides! It appears that Mobil 1 will not do the job. Amazing. But get this...Valvoline MaxLife will!! In fact, in one of the threads, they show a picture of where MB used to recommend it. For some reason they stopped. Valvoline does indeed say it will meet 236.10.

My filter has been changed along with the little bit of oil you can get by just dropping the pan. I am looking to replace as much of what's left as possible. To do that, I'm looking at around a dozen quarts to 'flush' as much as possible. Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and use MB fluid and be done with it. I suspect the Valvoline would be plenty safe though.

Like Greg said: drain the pan, replace fluid, then a couple more times. Using 12 quarts you can do that 3-4 times and then you should be good to go (40,000 miles anyway).

At some point send a sample to Blackstone. A basic analysis is $22.50 plus postage to send it to them. Go to the website and request the free sample containers. I had mine done at 58,000 and they confirmed I was past due and running on the original fill.

Lastly if you have MB fluid in there now, stay with the same thing. It might not be necessary but it just makes good sense to me.

I finally got a response from Mobil 1...and they freely admit their oil does not meet 236.10.

I did a DIY on this a couple of years ago. I used Dexron III and it met ALL Specs from MB. I have NEVER had a problem since. I only replaced the Tranny Fluid and Filter.
Dexron III is much cheaper than all the others and readily available.
Do a search under my s/n for the DIY with pictures.

What kind of MB do you have Charles, it's not in your profile. Dexron III is ok for some of the older cars, but apparently not the newer 722.6xx transmissions.

Hey, MM. From his avatar it looks like he has a 202 and most of them had the 722.5xx, for which Dex III or Mobil1 are fine.

We all know it's dangerous to make a general statement based on specific circumstances and this is probably a prime example. Someone who runs off and dumps Dex in their five or seven speed is going to be sorely disappointed. But I'm sure Charles will be happy to pay for the replacement transmission.
