Question Knowledge and Experience needed...

Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum, and I have a few questions that I've been struggling with. I'm trying to pick out the best older car to purchase. I've been looking at BMWs, but they don't quite fit the bill. So now I'm researching MBs...
Okay, I'm looking for a very "classic" car that epitomizes quality and reliability and has a heritage of excellence. To me, decent gas mileage (around 18 city and 28 highway is what I'm looking for) is more important than power. This car will be used as a daily driver and project car, so an older model will do just fine. I really like the 1980s Benz look, but do these years have the comfort, gas mileage, and reliablity that I'm looking for?
Any advice on appropriate models would be greatly appreciated,

Sounds like you might be for 1978 -1985 diesel W123 or W126
The 300turbo diesels have good HP, but 240D can be bought much cheaper. If you can find them and be patient waiting for them to accelerate.
Good luck and welcome to the forum.

You should buy what looks good to you and what you like to drive. But you're going to get quite a bit more car from the early 90s than from the 80s, and have a better chance of finding a nice one. Based on your objectives forget about the latter half of the 90s. In my view the best cars MB ever made were the bad wiring harness, ASR-less cars from 92 to 95, those with LH 119 and HFM 104 motors.

Thanks Kajtek1 and Deanyel, I'll look into the vehicles you mentioned. Out of curiosity, what is the reliability and gas mileage of the vehicles you listed??
Does anyone else have advice?

1983-85 300D TurboDiesel........the LAST real Benz.
Ask anyone who owns one if they are willing to sell it. lol....good luck!
Or better yet ask anyone who used to own one if they regret selling it.

I have one ('83 TurboDiesel, Anthracite Gray and Sienna interior) and can't bring myself to sell.
It is IMO the most comfortable of all my Benzes and has cachet that the newer cars just can't match.
