Post 1984 500SEL Transmission Fluid/Tranmission Question

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what type of Transmission fluid I should put in my 1984 500 SEL W126. I noticed the other day as I was driving the transmission may have slipped a little bit, and I think its time to replace the transmission fluid, gasket, and filter, etc. Any advice in this situation would def help, also if you know where to get the recommended transmission fluid, that information would also be a great deal of help to me!

Thank you!

Have you tried a search on the W126 forum (look in the sedans section below) or looked in your owner's manual? Any MB dealer should be able to tell you plus sell you the fluid unless you are looking for an aftermarket equivalent. I'm sure those are readily available for a car that old.

The short answer is Dexron but it gets a little more complicated with the numeric suffix. Your car would have been Dexron II when it came out, which was replaced by Dexron III, and recently by Dexron VI, what happened to IV and V I don't know. For more info see - DEXRON - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I think you're fine with Dexron III, if you should find it, or a Dexron III look alike (Dex/Merc), or Dexron VI. I saw something once about III being better for old cars than VI, but I can't remember what it was, and I suspect that one day we're not going to have a choice. No need to go to the dealer - you can get them anywhere.

The only issue I've heard regarding debris is if you power flush your tranny and therefore dislodging a bunch of stuff better left where it is. A simple drain/refill with a filter change should present no problem.

I am going to the following service on my 1984 300SD Transmission.

1. Drain the transmission pan.
2. refill with sacrificial Import ATF.
3. Run the car through the gears.
4. Drain the Transmission pan.
5. remove transmission pan and filter.
6. install new filter and transmission pan with new gasket.
7. refill with sacrificial ATF.
8. Run car through gears.
9. Drain Transmission pan
10 Refill with AMSOIL Universal synthetic ATF.

Did a similar service to 2007 BMW 328i using Redline Synthetic ATF and no issues have developed.
