Exclamation 2002 ML 320 None starter

Hi Everyone, I'm trying to buy an ML320 2002 small accident damage on driver side, but these is what the salvage advert says below.

Car has full service history. This is the face lift model with the revised dash board and heater controls etc. Immaculate pre accident car that has a vey high spec. Has a problem with the immobiliser since when you turn the ignition on the headlamps flash and the engine does not turn over. Engine can be turned over by the strater motor relay.

Is this a big problem? PLEASE HELP!!! New Member

If this would be your first benz, then walk away. No, RUN. Otherwise it will also be your last benz because you will chase this problem with time and money and end up with a really bad taste in your mouth and thinking they suck.

There's an old saying that the worst benz is a cheap benz and this would qualify. If it was an easy and cheap fix, it would be fixed and not for sale.

Spend the money on a decent used one that isn't a crash survivor or has been abused. Otherwise set aside an amount equal to what you are spending to buy this one and plan on spending that much to fix it.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)

Welcome to the Forum. the ECU is the Electrical Control Unit. It is basically the brain of the whole car.

Don't you think these is the problem with this ML, and if this is the case, how much for the ECU?

med2, I'll say it for the last time: let this one go. The ECU is one of several things it could be, and all of them together run into the several thousand dollar range...and that is just for the parts. Diagnostics could add substantially to that number. Remember this thing cost about $50K when new (USD); the parts are still very expensive, even if you can buy the vehicle cheaply.

To my thinking the problem is a bit more likely to be DAS related (which can tie into the ECU), and if you want to spend the rest of the day reading, search that on this forum using the google custom search box above. After you read a few posts about it, you'll happily close the book on this vehicle.

There are only a few times to buy a non-running vehicle. One is if you're an expert on it and know without a doubt exactly how to fix it and how much it will cost you. Another is if you have one like it and just want to buy the non-runner for parts before you sell off what's left. The third is if you're being given it, literally, and you don't mind spending countless hours and dollars to dig through it yourself and learn all about it to transform yourself into the first option. The last is if it's just such a good deal you're going to buy it and part it out, knowing you'll make a profit on the process.

If you want a better idea, call a dealer local to you. Ask them their approximate charge to start the diagnostic procedure on this as well as the cost involved in fixing the most three likely things it could be.

I've been around these cars for several years now. If that car were next door so I could push it home and the cost was more than half of the value of the parts I could sell, I'd walk away. Period.

Now if you're bound and determined to proceed, I wish you good luck and I can assure you it will be a learning experience. In the end you may learn that you hate the experience, but still...

Last thought...you were thinking of putting a thousand pounds into it? With the VAT over there, I don't think that will even cover the cost of the ECU, assuming that is the problem. You can ask the dealer when you call about diagnostic costs.

gregs210, I'm not denying what you are trying to say to me, i've been to the dealer before i came to this site, they said the same thing, IT COULD BE ANYTHING, but as you know about dealers, they always want to rip you off, this is not the first time i'm buying a salvage car, my wife's 2006 Toyota Yaris was bought from a salvage garage with some damage on the near side which my local garage put together for me and we have a new car ever since. I know this is different, but gregs210, i'm just trying to get some info to help me with my project, so don't get upset with me, life it self is a risk, you win some you loose some, but you live to fight another day. In the UK, this is the only way some of us can drive good cars lol, local scrap yard, you can pick up panels and other parts, put it together and take it for MOT test and you get your self a drive of your life lol.
