hunting off-road ML's

Hi folks, found the site courtesy of Rudedudes ML pics.

I'm from the middle of the UK, currently running a 96 Disco V8 lifted & lockers etc, but am getting old, and fancied something comfortable and different!
Not many ML's around here, certainly for off-road use, but I'm enquiring to how good they could be? I guess I'll be off to the ML forum now....

Regards Tony

Welcome to the forum Tony. I would get myself a G wagon if I was looking for a good off-road Benz.

To be honest, If I wanted a good off-roader, I'd keep my Landy, but I want a good on-roader too.
Land Rovers are a compromise either they're good on road or modified and only really good off-road.
G-Wagons seem to be expensive over here, and by the same token are more like driving a Landy........

Now I'm looking for something comfortable, modifiable but different.
Hence the ML track.

Well, my advice would be an ML with an offroad package which rises 11cm more compared to standart airmatic. Offroad package includes extra differential locks and lowrange gearbox.

I have one with the offroad package and you can't believe tha capability of the car.

We own a 1999 ML 320 (first generation), it has no problems going off-road, I've done some pretty serious off-roading with it, it's way better off-road than other SUV's (X5, Touareg, Q7, you name it). But it's completely rubish on-road. It has a gearbox that works in geological times, it's slow, and the build quallity is... well... not very "mercedes like" (that means the interior will fall appart into very small pieces of plastic).

So altough it's a very good off-road car, it's not very good on-road.

The new ML however is different, I guess it doesn't have the off-road skills of the previous model but it's much better on-road.

Here's a pic of my ML off-road

I've been driving a CLK200 for the last 3 years. Sure its' small engine has limits but fun to drive it. Before buying ML320CDI with 7G tronic I had hesitations. Because I'll be 99% on road not off road. so its onroad capablities are much more important. After 3 months I can say that It really satisfies me. Gearbox is a lil bit slow reacting but this is a suv. This is normal I think.

I'm not an expert for sure but everyone says MB improved the quality of ML's in years, so I'm sure there is a big difference between 1999 and 2008 produced MLs. Have a test drive.

Cheers Guys....

Halbasus, that sounds just like a typical Landrover (are you sure you haven't got one in disguise)!
I'm looking at a '99 ML320, but wondering if I'd be better stretching to the ML430? More power and similar economy...?

Perhaps I ought to buy a Toyota.... NEVER!!!!
