Post New Owner of 2004 CLK 55 AMG

I'm the new owner of a black 2004 CLK 55 AMG with 50k miles on it. I love the car, especially the power when I stomp on it, and am very happy with the purchase. I have a question, well...two questions that i hope someone can help answer. When idling, I hear a very noticeable knocking or tapping noise from the engine. This doesn't happen on cold starts, only after the engines warmed up. I'm not sure but it sounds as if there's not enough engine oil and the lifters are knocking but the gauge says the oil level is fine. I had the MB dealership check into it and was told that the noise is normal. "All the AMG motors do that" I was told. That just doesn't seem right for such an expensive hi performance machine. Also, the tapping noise seems to be getting louder over time which has me worried. Can anyone tell me what the problem is? And if the dealership is correct about the knocking being normal? What can I do to resolve the problem or at least quiet the noise? I'm hoping it doesn't lead to an expensive repair bill down the road.
My second question has to do with engine oil. I seem to need to add oil at a rate of about a quart every 2000 miles or so. Is this normal? According to the dealership, it is and is nothing to worry about. How can that be? I don't see any drip marks indicating a leak so is the engine burning the oil? Seems a bit excessive to be normal. I'm using Mobil 1 10w30 synthetic oil. Is that ok or should I be using something else, like 10w40? Please help. Any advice, in-site, suggestions and/or recommendations is greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

You can get a "knock" or a tap from both loose plug leads, and from the ABS unit. That oil consumption is on the high side - my E55 (same motor) wouldn't use a drop between services, and I used to drive it to the alps and back, from London...

...I make that 917 Bhp...!
