Please help with intermittent stalling

Hi,
I am new to these forums and in need of help please. I think I posted this in the wrong forum earlier, so forgive repeating .....

I know this has been covered extensively, but I just want to be sure ...!

I have a 2004 E270 cdi with about 120k on it. It cuts out intermittently, and sometimes will start, sometimes not. That is, crank sometimes turns but no start, or crank doesn't turn at all.

The "Engine Service" fault light comes on after stall, then it might even go out after restart, or stay on. Light then may stay on for days with no stall, or light goes off, only to return at next stall. Doesn't seem to matter if engine hot or cold,

Would I be right in concluding crankshaft position sensor is the culprit?

This has been going on for some months now and it's driving me mad ........!!

Apprecaite some guidance. Thanks.

It could be your crankshaft position sensor but you have a W211 and you might try asking on that forum as well. CPS is a common problem with that many miles on gassers but I'm not very familiar with diesels.
