Failte from Dublin, Ireland

Hi Guys,

Just acquired my third MB and second W124 Coupe.

Back behind the wheel of a 94 E320 Coupe - Listed as black but it's really a dark gunmetal, black leather interior.

Good points - previous owner loved the car and took care of it. Recession in Ireland dropped 4G off the going rate.

Bad points - first owner didn't take the electric seat or cruise option. Can live with that as in Ireland any motorway longer than 5 miles is required by law to have periodic traffic calming measures, usually in the form of a toll booth or retired Stazi agents employed to drive in front of you at no more than 110 kph and change lanes when you do.
Tax. Irish road tax is prohibitive above 1Lt. Compared with running a younger 2Lt car over 5 years, including purchase and maintenance, the cost is the same so I'm going to enjoy the next few years.

Cheers and thanks for a great forum.

MBG

Welcome. Sounds like Ireland is not a fun place to drive.

Well, I bought my first, a 300CE, in the UK - reasonable insurance and cheap tax ($360). Loads of motorways and if you stay under 90 the police won't bother you too often.

The insurance in Ireland is a little more expensive but affordable, but the road tax works out at $2233 per year. It hurts a bit but as the car has no depreciation and thanks to the recession I got it for a relative bargain I can bear the pain for a few years.

There's not much to compare to a pre-Chrysler Merc so I intend to enjoy it while I can. When she turns 30 the tax should drop to $100 a year unless the government get's clever. Lets hope oil is still cheap then :-)
