Buying MB, urgent question!

Hi,

I live in PA. Dealer located a 2009 car I want in TX. He gave me a price sheet that shows a charge for moving the car from TX to PA (~$1200). He claims they have to use a trucking company, that's why this charge is extra. Does this sound right? Am I expected to pay extra to get the car from TX?

Thanks

If I understand how it works, if your PA dealer has a desirable car to trade with the TX dealer for the one you want, it works much more smoothly. In that case, both dealers still have to pay for incomimg/outgoing freight but they can work out a package deal and might pass the cost saving on to you, or even eat it.

However, if your car is only coming one-way, they are trying to pass the cost on to you. I think you can bargain that down to at least 50-50 or maybe better. But, if you beat up the PA dealer on the selling price, they might not budge.

It is new car, so the $1200 charge very likely include enclosed container.
I have a friend who deals with older cars and he can have one delivered coast to coast for around $250.
Bottom line, $1200 seem to be full retail price, while dealers get up to 50% discounts.
Sounds like price gouging.
Buying the car should be easy. If you don't like the car, or don't like the price >>> walk.

I call BS. For a decent-size truck, just the fuel coast-to-coast would cost well over $250, plus I doubt a driver would work for free. Unless, of course, both your friend and/or his driver are Polish, in which case all bets are off, including the car in question ever making it to the destination.

$1200 would be for a fully enclosed trailer with a very good shipping company. I would expect it in a A/C trailer at that price. Bottom line, you are dealing with a dealer who wants to rip you off. Only in private transactions should you pay for shipping. I have had dealers locate cars for me and have never once paid for transportation changes. If this is a car that you can still order, go ahead and do that. Its always cheaper for a dealer to sell an ordered car because he doesn't have to finance it. If they won't budge on the price, walk away. Buy from the TX dealer yourself, have them put it on a trailer and send it back for about $500.

$500 seems reasonable. Do shipping yourself if you'd like. Just a quick quote from DAS shipping from Houston to Phili is $464. Door-to door would be a little extra.

$1,200 is too much. Shop around. I doubt it should cost more than $750 using the right independent carrier - not the big name Bozos out there in retail land.

I have used Mills Transport in Dubuque, Iowa to transport a vintage motorcycle a couple years ago; http://www.millstransport.com/ Mills was 50% less than the big names, and offered 0% deductible at no extra charge for any damage whatsoever in-transit.
