Dont know if you came right already, but I had the same problem. First thought it was a loose exhaust bracket and left it till I get to a Merc garage to pick up spares. A week later I tried to overtake a truck.. Full throttle, geared back, and the next moment my engine management light came on!
The problem turned out not to be a missing exhaust bracket, but the core of my catalytic converter has disintegrated, broken up into smaller chunks, and blocked my exhaust pipe (resulting in my engine misfiring).
Word of advice: cut the cats out, and leave them out! I first tried replacement cats, but my 5.5L V8 cleaned them out in less than a month! So I just replaced the cats with pipes.
Without the cats my ML now sounds like a V8, AND has more power!
Hope this helps!
