When I unlock the trunk (either by using the key fob or the trunk release button inside the car) the trunk unlocks, but, it does not automatically raise the trunk anymore. I believe the problem is with the trunk assist pump?

Hi and welcome axelax! I have the same car and I believe the springs disconnecting within the trunk frame is a common reason for this failure. Did you happen to notice a pop the last time it was opened? My understanding is that the vacuum line only pops the trunk mechanism and the springs take it from there. In some cars the metal where they connect is thin and breaks over time. Can you remove the covers and confirm that yours are attached or not?

Also, you will find this board very useful if you go into the User CP and add your car info and location. It helps members to make specific recommendations for your area as we have members all over the world and in virtually every city. Also, there is a W202 board (your cars chassis designation) listed under sedans, so go there in the future for advice from members with the same car as you have. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

That was spot on

The left spring was disconnected because one of the metal attachment points broke, probably because of age. I simply reconnected the spring using a different attachment point and the trunk now lifts automatically. I can't believe how easy that was ! Many, many thanks !
