After a lifetime of driving second hand cars to death with little care for maintenence or repair, mostly Australian Fords and Holdens, but including a couple of W108s,I recently developed a desire to own a small collection of classic mercs, and instead of turning them into wrecks, see how I would go restoring them.Always loved Benz's,my favorite cars, especially the classics. But with no knowledge or experience I'm starting out small and cheap and going to work my way up to a 450 6.9 or a Pullman!
So I bought a couple of W114's on ebay,a '75 250 with the 2.8L carby m130 and a '74 280E with the D jet M110.The 250 is in great condition,156000k's,old lady owner, full service history with only a couple of easy welds required in the floor pans, otherwise rust free.Drives like a dream and not much restoring really needed.Lucky to get this one.The 280E has a mint interior, straight body, some rust in drivers floor pan but not serious.Brakes, water pump, blowing white smoke, cracked windscreen, some sill and door return rust, exhaust, air co clutch, boot floor pan corrosion are my novices diagnosis so far. This car has service history to 163000kms and is at 178000, it seems to have been garaged for many years.I'm sure there's more to find but someone spent alot on this car over the years, dash has been rebuilt with near new cover, been resprayed, interior in faultless condition. So I am off and away, doing lots of homework and getting ready to cut and weld steel for the first time in my life.I'm either going to get a classic merc collection started or cut off a body part and set fire to both cars,my garage and my house!Stay tuned and I'll try to get a photo thread going,I'm going to need alot of help.
