Check the sockets. If you have a W210 (1997-2002) those are a known issue. You should be able to clean the contacts with a fine grit sandpaper. There might be other methods too. Check the sticky threads in the W210 forum. Just scroll down from this General forum and look under Sedans. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

From what I remember fixing my W123, the problem was friction clutch that pushes the digits. I consider it unrepairable.

Exclamation halfway there....

i got the 2 rear brake lights working. the third brake light on the rear panel still doesnt work. the bulb is fine and the contacts are fine. if a relay is faulty, can it still work for one thing it controls and not another? for example, if it controls the front and the rear and it stopped working for the rear can it still work for the front? im still trobleshooting the rear inner lights which are faulty. the reverse lights still work, as well as the license plate lights. any ideas?
