2005 SL65 AMG - 3,000 RPM limit in park?

I just purchased a 2005 SL65 AMG and was revving the engine in park to hear the exhaust note and noticed that the engine would not go over 3,000 rpm on the tach. Same in neutral.

In drive with the car in motion the engine operates smoothly and normally going to redline with no issues in any gear.

Is this normal in the design to protect the engine from exceeding the redline with the 3,000 rpm limit in park/neutral....? Any information and comments would be helpful. Never had a car do this, but this is my first V-12 with this kind of power, etc....

The check engine light was on a few days ago for several days and went out after using Techron fuel system cleaner in a tank. Don't know if this is related or not.... Any similar experiences ? Thanks again.........

It's normal for reasons you've speculated.

This feature prevents idiots from ruining the engine, especially when cold. You will already have an 'adequate' repair bill trying to keep this car on the road, so the least Mercedes could have done would be to put in some safe guards to prevent otherwise daily dealer visits.
