ignition lock will not turn

Hi .
I know this has been asked many times ,but was wondering if someone could just clarify one point?
The barrel with the key in will not trun
The silver cover over the barrel will rotate so i can get a rod down either side but i assume from reading on the forum that the barrel must turn as well to release not just this cover ?
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks

Current IR keys are completely different from the older keys, and there are a few in-between. I guess you are talking about an old mechanical key which does not turn because the ignition slot and the key are worn out.

Diesel could also be right, and youd have to pay for a new ignition
