Temperature Gauge question

I am a fairly new MB owner (2002 C320) ....my question is where is the tempurature gauge on the darn thing? On my screen that has the clock on it which is down on the right side...on the left side it has a +88 ...is that the outside temperature reading? The reason I am asking is I was driving today on the highway and saw it go up to +140 and then drop down back to +102 within 3-4 minutes...I do live in Houston Tx and it is very hot here now but not +140 degrees....SO I started wondering if this was in fact a bad thing ....was the car running hot ...etc...SO how can you tell what the engine temp is....or is this it...

Thanks for the replys in advance...

I'm not sure about 2002, but on my 2006 the coolant temp gauge is in degrees Celsius, and usually reads ~90. I'd definitely check the cooling system. Could be low coolant, but more likely a stuck thermostat.
