Well were to begin!!?? I fell in love with the Mercedes Benz 560SL back when I was a parts manager for a Lincoln Mercury dealer in Wilmington Delaware in 1989. Someone traded a cherry 1986 560SL for a Mark VII and I was able to drive it home a couple of times, I lived 48 miles away from the dealership so that was a sweet deal. But I was never able to afford one.
Now to present day....... I came across a 1987 560SL for what I thought was a good price I went to see it (I guess my love of the car showed a little because my girlfriend said "You have already decided to buy the car haven't you??) and it was in good condition, with the exception of the rubber weather stripping and a few other items. I started it up no problem there took it for a spin ran real good, when I returned I said I will take it. Now the seller had a lot of work done to the car by a shop that specializes in European autos, he had copies of all the service he had done to the car to give me. He needed to get the car smoged and he said he would take care of that and we could finalize the sale later in the week.
Ok so here we are 7 days later because of my schedule not his, I go pick up the car at his ex's house where the hard top was being stored we install the hard top and I drive off....GREAT!!! I now am a proud MB owner. I drive the car here and there that day a Saturday, that night, the next day
first problem flat tire passenger side rear. No big deal I am the first to use the jack wooo hoooo no problems the rest of the day. Monday I needed to run a few errands after work so I dragged my daughter with me, returned home no problems back in the garage. Now comes Wednesday i go to AAA to have the title transferred and now it is officially mine! A friend of mine came over and I said lets take it for a ride.
It won't start just cranks. I looked at a few things one thing I did find is the distributor lock down bolt is loose and you can turn it. I plan on calling the shop that worked on it last and see if they will check it out. Now I want everyone to know I use to turn wrenches for a living but my field of expertise is American not European so I will need to do some research on the car and would be grateful for any help I can get.
I think the car has a mind of its own and with the temperature averaging 110f for the last two weeks it decided it likes the garage a lot more than the freeway. Wake me up in a couple of months!!
How smart am I?? I do A/C and Refrigeration work in the desert
