Which car to choose

Hi all, I am looking to buy a 4 seater, for under $10k. I have owned mercedes all of my life including

1981 300D
1990 E300D
1996 E300 Diesel
1999 ML E320

I am debating between getting a 1997-2000 C class 4 cylinder vs a 1998-2000 E300 turbo diesel. I am interested in input. Basically I know the cars, what I am looking for is any red flags in terms of expense, in regards to maintence, bad design etc. My understanding is that both are good cars, but I would be very interested in what the general mercedes community thinks about these two vehicles and which is a better/cheaper car to have.
I have a young one and one and one more on the way, so I am looking for a nice although inexpensive vehicle. Honestly, having MBs and knowing them they are the only thing I really trust and they have never let me down.
thanks in advance for any input.

Between those two, I'd choose the E-Class diesel but I think 1999 was the last year they were sold in the USA.

Because, sort of. Being an owner of a W210 that runs on gasoline I might be a little biased. But I hang out on that forum (W210 under Sedans) and have noticed that generation of MB diesels seem to run forever. Yes they have their problems and I really can't compare them intelligently with the C-Class of the same vintage.

Right on, I had a 1996 E300 diesel and have since sold it to a friend of mine. It has over 300k on it now, but it was not without expense and it was gutless after the first 150k. The turbo might be better, additionally they are almost impossible to find under 100k, and those are $10 to $12k, which is what led me to thinking about the C class.

Thanks for your thoughts.

1998-1999 E300D. That is the best on the list. I would say a 2000-02 E320, but unless it has a lot of miles or rust, its going to be more than $10k. It's also a solid car.
