Cool brake light on dash

I have a 91 300sel and the brake light is on in the dash. The e brake is off and hitting the switch, the fluid level is good but there is a leak in a rear brake line. What does the light indicate?. Rich

Could be pads need replacing. Could be the leak in the brake line is reducing line pressure below safe levels. Could be a bad switch at the e-brake. Could be a fault somewhere in the brake sensor system.

I'd bet on brake pads, but a car that old could have a fault in the brake sensor system due to age. Connections corrode, insulation gets brittle and breaks, wires break from flex.

Good luck finding the gremlin.

While the brake line is leaking, the the warning light is a minor issue because you should not drive the car before the brake line leak is fixed. Once done, the advice above should be a good start to figure out the rest.

I assume you are talking about the red brake light and not the amber one. Red brake light means your parking brake is on or that your brake fluid in the reservoir is low. There are two chambers in the reservoir. If you have a leak, it is likely that the chamber for the rear brakes may indeed be low regardless of what you think you saw. But as mentioned above, why would you even drive such a dangerous car?
