Talking Smartkey Programming

Hi, I was told by a locksmith that if I buy a Brand New Smartkey for a 2005 E500 and put it in the ignition that the car will self program the smartkey. I would still have to get the key blank laser cut. Can anybody confirm this? If it is true should the Keyless Go work as well? Or is this false info and do I need to take it to a dealer for programming. Thanks

I can't confirm this to be honest, but I think you would need the dealer to do it since they have the computers to do it (diagnosis computers, etc.). The keys are supposed to send the same code the car is assigned to, so I'm guessing if the key has no code, it won't work.

Anyway, a locksmith told you this?

In my experience with smart keys, you have to order replacement/extra keys from an authorized MB dealer and it arrives from MBUSA already programmed. I don't have the keyless go feature so I don't know about that but I strongly suspect that will work with the new key.
