New car, new problems!

Hi everyone! I'm new here and I also have a new car that needs some work! I recently bought my 88 190 e from a friend of mine for dirt cheap. Its a sweet show car but needs some work to run properly.. and Im new with german cars. First off it will not start unless I dump gas down the intake (i was told cold start valve is bad?). It does have old gas from two years ago in it yet, I did put some iso heet in there to try to get the water out of it, but i have no clue if that will help. I've heard mercedes are extremely picky with gas and won't run at all if it's bad or not premium grade. My bud told me it did need a cold start valve and an overload relay when i bought it from him (I have no clue what that relay is or what it does or even where it is) but its a thought i suppose. Secondly, if I can get the car to start with the manual priming method, It will not hold an idle and also runs extremely rough (like it's missing on a cylinder or something). I charged the batteries, changed the oil, and spark plugs and wires and free-wheeled the motor to get the oil through it. it turned over just fine and batteries both register 12 V or higher (has second marine battery in the trunk for the air ride system, also connected to the alternator). But it will stall promptly if I don't keep pumping the petal. What could cause this? I have never owned or worked on a german car beefore and it has me stumped (i went from an 84 Cadillac DeVille to this car). Any ideas as to what these problems could be? Any input is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks

You have what MB calls a W201 so you might also post this on that model-specific forum. Good luck.
