I'm writing this after several months of looking for an exceptional W140 or W126 Mercedes.
There are so many junky examples of these cars that have not been maintained but look very good.
I can't emphasize enough that anybody searching for that ideal Mercedes should always ALWAYS get a prepurchase inspection. Car after car I've been attracted to has gone into a Mercedes shop for an inspection and had the technician-jury return the same verdict: It would cost thousands of dollars to get it back into something that means reliability.
Frustrating? You bet. I've spent hundreds of dollars for these inspections, but not thousands of dollars in repairs and loan payments for cars I was very happy I didn't buy.
Before you're tempted to buy from a private seller or dealer without full service records on a car, spend the hundred or so bucks and have the car inspected by a Mercedes shop. You'll be soooo glad you did. Okay, I'm off my soap box. I wish you luck in finding the right car for you!
