Post Buying a 2001 E-Class 430

I am in New York State and I am about to buy a 2001 E-Class 430 with 97,000 miles on it. I'm buying it from a friend and he's giving it to me for what I deem to be relatively cheap (7K). Can anyone be so kind to lend me some advice on what I can expect from this model and year. I am not mechanically inclinded and I do not pretend to know the first thing about this car. I'm enthusiastic to purchase my first Mercedes, but I just want to make sure that this is a wise investment.

Can I use low end gas? How often do I change the oil and with what? He told me I should service the transmission soon, do you believe he just meant get the fluid changed? Any advice anyone could give me would be much appreciated.

First off, look at the top of any of the W210 forum's pages (that's the MB chassis designation for it) and you will see the Sticky threads. Common problem areas for this series of E-Class are listed there. Unless there are some major issues, $7000 sounds like a fair/good price.

You should use the MB recommended 91 octane gas and there is a FSS (flexible service system) that will tell you when to change the oil (approx. 10-13.000 mile intervals). Most here suggest changing at least some of the transmission fluid & filter around 50,000 and then again every 30 or so. If you manage to change it all (steps also in Stickys), less frequently is fine.
