Question Need advise - tire size CLK wheel

I have staggered wheels on my CLK - 16" wheels with 7" wide in front and 8" wide at rear. Running 205/55/16 at the front and 225/50/16 at the rear - just as factory recommends.

The question is for the spare. I bought an 8" wide wheel for the spare to replace the 7" wide steel one. It is identical to the two rear wheels. Do you think I can mount a 215/55/16 on this rim? My thought is that if I had to put the spare on the front for an extended period, 215 would be preferable to 225..

Advise, please.

For extended periods the 215/55/16 tyre is not good because it has a different diameter from your other wheels. You would likely get ESP and other errors.

You could explain if you are changing the current spare for aesthetic reasons or something else, to motivate forum members to respond. I would keep the current spare instead of the new wheel with a 215/55/16 tyre if the current one is in good condition.

Thanks for the reply - current spare is worse

The current spare is a 16" steel wheel - 7" wide - with a 205/50/16 tire on it. The diameter is way off the other 4 wheels.

My thought was to get a spare alloy rim like the others in style so that if anything happened to one of the wheels, the spare would be able to take the place of the damaged wheel. BUT, of course, I had to choose between a 7" wide and an 8" wide (difficult to have both in the trunk !!)

Sounds like I need to have the same diameter as the other 4 wheels - and in that case, I should go with the 225/50/16 tire on the 8" wide rim.

Thanks for pointing out that I could have ESP problems.

Any other members are welcome to join in - I want to do the "right" thing....
