Any danger in giving out my VIN?

Have my car advertised in auto trader, buyer wants VIN

I'm just a little suspicious as he has not come out to see the car, the first time we talked he called on his cell and didn't realize it was long distance [worried about the cost!], next time he called he wanted to know if he could set up payment plan [NO!], had all kinds of gut instincts telling me to get rid of this guy

Am I being just a little too paranoid- the car is mine free and clear- any input appreciated

Yes, you should provide your VIN. The prospective buyer may be looking to run a Carfax.

I can walk up to your car parked in a lot and read the vin through window. So, It's already on display for anyone that wants it.

true enough, just really worried with all the press identity theft has been getting lately- this guy will now know my name, address, tel # and VIN, should be enough for him to throw a lien against the car or make my life miserable

Give it to him. I always ask for this first before going to see a car. No need to waste time seeing cars that have been in accidents/salvage/ect... Now the right thing to do would be to provide him with a Carfax/AutoCheck report so he doesn't have to run one.

Should give him the VIN or provide a CarFax listing.
Payment plan will be a BIG caution flag (as he can't even afford toll calls). Wise to say NO, and pay EXTRA attention if you decided to deal to him. ie CASH ONLY (or CERTIFIED check).

FYI, I make a comfortable amount, but my cell phone provider has ludicrous fees about long distance. I'd probably be like "Oh shit!" when I realized as well when it cost me 5x as much as my landline.

Then you have no problem buying ANY Mercedes.

I was just advising sualk54 NOT to do any Seller financing unless you know how to do re-possession. The buyer's financial status has no bearing on deciding to sell him the car or not as his money (or his Bank's money) is as good as any.
