I guess you mean LHD cars from countries with RHD traffic. I don't know about the US but the above is not exactly right because several RHD traffic countries allow RHD cars.
However if the import rules for India ask for a year or two ownership of the imported car, then the OP doesn't seem to have a lot of options if he wants to import a car.
India also allowed imports of LHD cars earlier, we still have a number of LHD Jeeps, American and European LHD cars, we drive on the left side of the road therefore it is safer and more convenient to drive RHD cars.
The import of LHD cars, and pre owned cars was banned recently by the Govt., due to lobbying by the manufacturers/importers. Indians pay a substantial premium on cars they buy in India, as compared to the same model sold elsewhere, on and above the customs and other duties. If imports of pre owned cars were permitted, they would have been available at a fraction of the cost of the same vehicle sold new by the manufacturer.Almost all luxuary cars are now available in India, brand new and imported by the manufacturers themselves.
You are right, the possibality of any person of Indian origin who is currently a resident of the US, owning a RHD car in the US, useing it for a couple of years and than shipping it to India is very remote.
RH steering, LH driving, are some of the legacies of the Brits when they ruled us.
