Quick Check - Disconnect the Battery

My '89 420SEL's came on on a trip (on my way home). Took it to my mechanic and he was busy for a couple of days. He told me to disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes to reset the computer. Did that and it's not come on since on several long trips.

No biggie, just had to redo the radio presets and it was a cheap fix.

Clearing the code by

disconnecting the battery will not clear the problem. The code is still actively stored in the ecu and the problem still exists.
Not seeing the light may comfort you but in the long term if it is a critical issue your bliss turned to ignorance by the advice of a shitty mechanic might cost you far more than you bargained.

Op cam sensor easy diy front of engine,on head. examine for oil leak common to the issue.

95 E320 check gas cap flip over gasket and check all vac lines to engine.
95's were also subject to the dreaded wire harness issue so examine your wires. If they look like mummy wraps better start saving the moola

Of course, trade it in for a Harley.

Not a fix. At least OBDII is easier to read than the OBDI/OBD.

They had to keep it in over the weekend. I'll get the report tomorrow when the wife get's it back. It was bad news. Leaking oil all over the engine. Cost 1800 plus taxes.

I think Skodas have a better reputation that MB's now......

Sorry to hear that Joe. A 2003 w/58,000 should not be having anything that serious going on (my turn to state the obvious). Have you had to add any oil to it recently? If oil is literally "all over the engine" it looks like you would have gotten an add oil light. BTW, did you ever ask on the W203 forum in case this is a common occurance?

Skodas? Good one!

OK - Battery Disconnect Did Not Fix Problem

So my shitty Mercedes mechanic of over 25 years told me wrong. I've driven over 5000 miles since the shitty mechanic told me wrong and have had no re-occurance of the check engine light coming on. Hmmmmmm

I bow to the greater knowledge of Ohlord

1989 cars might be a bit before ohlord started working on them. In his defense, he's usually correct if the problems concern slightly newer models. Does your car even have an ECU that stores error codes? At least on more modern models, once a code is stored by the ECU it stays there until the problem is fixed and the code is cleared afterward.
