Check Engine - Fuel Cap?

My wife left the fuel cap off after filling our 2002 S430, and the CE light came on. Now, a few days later, it's still on. Is there any way to convince the car that the cap has been on for a few days now, or will it continue on it's stubborn German streak and make me take it to the dealer to have the code erased?

Silly German technocar...

Assuming there is nothing else wrong it will go out on its own after enough cycles.

FWIW there is a code reader you can buy at Amazon for $40 that will read and erase most codes...on all US market cars since 1996, including MB.

Silly California wife is right, but she's really pretty, and she loves "Butter", which is the name we've given to this ultra-soft, ultra-feminine (in my opinion, with it's desert silver exterior and biege interior) vehicle.

How many cycles should I wait before I assume something else is worng with the car?

Who knows. If it really is just the cap, eventually it will go out. Just have to wait till the ME decides to test the evap system.

Clear the CEL with an OBDII scanner or undo the negative lead on the battery for 30 minutes. If you choose the latter, make sure you know the radio code.

The security code that you need to input to get the radio working again after the battery is disconnected. If you do not have it, the dealership can give it to you if you provide them with the VIN and proof of ownership.

That's what I figured, I just never saw one written down anywhere, and I've never had to enter it, but I've never disconected the battery, either.

So, after 5 days the CE light has finally turned off again.

Silly car...

The car has a brain courtesy of German engineering

PS, get a german wife then you would understand the mentality.
