In my opinion, that one sentence says it all.

Mercedes Benz - Das beste oder nichts!

If Mercedes-Benz is Coke, BMW is Pepsi. If MB is Gatorade, BMW is Powerade. If MB is McDonald's, BMW is Burger King. If MB is Kleenex, BMW is Puffs. If Mercedes is F1, BMW is Formula 3. If MB is Tag Heuer, BMW is Fossil. If MB is Windows, BMW is Macintosh. BMW will always be second-best. BMW's are not bad cars, but there'll always be a better Mercedes out there.

Oh - and your friend's car is pretty evenly matched with yours in a straight line, but his car should beat yours around a track, as his suspension will allow him to corner at higher speeds and with more control.

I've owned several versions of each. The best BMW I had was an M3, awesome car! Drawback was not much room. Also had 5 series wagon. Another terrific car, though, oddly enough my wife didn't care for it that much.

I've had four MB's: a 450SL, 560SL and two E320s. The 320 is a better passenger hauler than the M3 and the 525 wagon. Not as engaging to drive but a solid, vault-like sedan. The 450 was cool but I wouldn't have driven it cross country. The 560, on the other hand, I've already driven from Washington DC to Mississippi. It's a satisfying car in ways that are hard to quantify.

The truth is they are both quality marquees, it's really up to your preference. As for me, I've got two Mercedes in my garage, an 2001 E320 and the 560SL. I have no plans on getting rid of either any time soon.

Good luck.

Both have their strength and weakness. No one beats the other all out. We all want to try something different once we get too bored with the routine - a guy married for over 7 years might want a girl friend or mistress; a guy who owns MB and BMW and has the extra money might want to try Porsche and then Ferrari or Maserati... because the feeling is different. My opinion: Benz a bit boring. BMW more exciting.

I've owned BMW before. No regrets. But, until they have a 4 door sedan that comes anywhere close to my CLS in sex appeal, I'm sticking with what I have.

Post My Three Choices

Of the three choices in the thread, the one undoubtedly more underrated is vs. Now, to the other two:

Mercedes is the motorcar. For performance, for workmanship, for quality, for maturity, for status, and yes, for narcissism. That's what makes Mercedes the unforgettable car.

Bimmer is the car for the kid in all of us. Are you ready to rumble? Let's race then. Great torque, mostly from the start, great engines, great performance,
great following.

So, each in its niche is a magnificent performer in the automotive industry and sport. But my heart is with the three-point star.

Cheers, JV

BMWs will corner at higher speeds, but at the cost of a firmer ride. Around town the BMW will give a harsher ride at slower speeds, the MB will corner well at track speeds (not as fast as the BMW), but will also give a plush ride in everyday use. The MB is the more practical of the two, for regular everyday use. Of course the MB can be beefed up for track use with after market suspension parts.
