Look for

... rust hidden in soft top well and blower motor compartment other than obvious body rust.

... records of replacement of timing chain guides and tensioner and cam oiler fittings within the last 100k miles. If no records, remove the driver side cam cover (easiest to r&r) and inspect. Have a new gasket and cam cover bolt copper seals on hand. Torque cover bolts to 3 to 4 Nm.

... maintenance records. Preventive maintenance is everything with these cars.

... vacuum issues. These cars are vacuum rich. Most vac problems are an easy fix but can be difficult to find.

There are those that will counsel timing chain replacement. The 1984 380SL has the same dual row chain setup as the 560SL and the chain itself is very durable so long as no chunks have broken off of the guide rails or tensioner and drifted into the chain and sprocket.

Enjoy!

If it is an unconverted one-row cam chain drive , run away.

timing chain

1984 and 1985 380SL have the dual row chain from factory. Very durable, particularly on the lower horsepower 380 engine. So long as you are not a horsepower freak, the 380SL is a great driving car with the added benefit of being content with regular (87 octane) fuel.
