Unhappy Merc CLK 230 (99-02) Driver door problems

Hello - I'm new to this excellent site and would be grateful for some advice.

About 1 week ago, I opened my main driver door fully and found that it would not close. It seemed like something was catching and as it was 2am outside a hospital car park where I work, it was difficult to call help. I used a little more pressure than usual to close the door and thought something (?check strap) slightly buckled.

The door is now closing but does not have its usual 'graded' closure as it used to (so is now swinging freely on opening and closing). In addition the window will open 50 percent before getting stuck if the door is closed, but if opened the window opens and closes freely. (The door is alligned properly and there is no obvious bend or break to the hinge elements).

Can someone please advise as to what the problem could be and what my next move should be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't want to be spending a lot of money for this as this car has unfortunately been drinking my money for various things over the last 3 years!

Much appreciated! Mercbab

An update on the door problem-just to help others with a similar problem in the future.

By forcing the door slightly, the check strap had jammed on a ?bearing and the screws holding the door part of the strap had bent and snapped.

Solution: A new door check strap £38 incl VAT and similar to get it correctly fitted by an independent mechanic.

Problem solved....simples!!
