Unhappy Catalytic Converter for 1996 c36

Good morning everyone to lovely rainy UK.

I need some advice on replacing the catalytic converter on my 1996 c36. I've been told it is breaking up!! and I am getting a loss of back pressure? and the occasional petrol smell through the ventilation. I have had some horrendous price quotes for both the catalytic converter and the cost of change.

I've googled the part BM90683 and it seems to come in either ceramic (£189) and steel (£774!!!)

Also this one on eBay.

I am a complete noob and dodgy mechanics dream on this as I don't have any idea what needs to be replaced so any help would be very appreciated.
