Post L Reg Mercedes overheat

Hi!

We have a Mercedes E200 saloon, L reg- 1994 I think. Runs great most of the time but in traffic the temperature gauge starts to climb and you have to turn the blower on to bring it down- this however means the car gets boiling hot- terrible in summer! Anyone know what might be wrong- have checked water level and it is fine- doesen't seem to be using loads or anything!

Thanks for your help

George

Did you say you are from the UK? Have you checked if your fan kicks on? You would probably find good help from the W124 forum. Not sure if you have a magnetic clutch driven fan where it could be the thermostat switch or if you have an electric fan.

Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you to first check/replace the thermostat, if it has been there for a while. When they get old, they cannot fully close and/or open. You can take it out and test it but for the price, just replace it.

It is pretty cheap. If that is not the problem, then move onto more expensive items.

This would give an idea of the cooling system condition, the radiator could be clogged too.
