CLK vs. SL

I am in the very early stages of contemplating my next Mercedes and would like some informal opinions. I am thinking either a W208 era CLK or an R129 SL. Either would be nearer the end of those model's production runs to get access to the updated goodies. I realize a 4 place coupe is a significantly different car than a 2-seat roadster but I don't so much mind the seating limitations of an SL so that becomes a mute point. So, too, is the convertible/hardtop factor as I would likely use the SL hardtop in place most of the time. Hopefully it will be a panorama top. Eliminating those two points, what are the differences between the cars in terms of agility, sense of size (does one "drive bigger" than the other), running costs, reliability, etc. I don't drive like a race car driver so GT cruising is my preferred method of relaxing.
Having a friend who describes his R129 as a "tank that just keeps on running and running" seems to contrast what I hear about CLK's being a bit more problematic. Also, is it a safe assumption that the higher original selling price of the SL by default makes it a more durable, ie: better built, car? This next purchase will be a special one for me as I'd like to buy one car I keep for the rest of my life. Of course I will have other cars that will come and go as secondary transport, but I love the idea of a lifelong vehicle for some abstract reason.
Any other issues, anecdotes or unfiltered suggestions are appreciated.

Hello DirectLA,

Your last sentence regarding wanting to keep the car for the rest of your life, in my opinion, is the deciding factor. I went for a R129 500SL, thinking that it would retain it's value thru the years. I really enjoy using it on the weekends. Since I wanted to keep it for my lifetime, I even to the extreme of having it disassembled, replaced all wear and tear parts, repainted. Driving that car gives me so much pleasure.

With the CLK, won't it be phased out and replaced by the newer W212 convertible?

SL without any question. The CLK is done and already out of production. The E class 2 door returns next month in the US.
