how do I replace the black plastic engine oil filler neck in '01 E320?

I had a slight oil leak around the engine oil filler. At first, I thought it was the
oil cap. Installed a new one and cleaned up the entire area. A few days
later, the oil returned. I have now discovered that the oil is leaking from
between the oil filler neck and valve cover.... Not a major leak... maybe
a small teaspoonful every couple of weeks... but enough to dirty up my
engine....

how do I replace the black plastic engine oil filler neck in '01 E320? I can't
tell how the neck is supposed to be removed. I do not want to accidentally
break off a piece of it and have it end up inside the engine....

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Looks like there is an O ring under there. Item 41 and the part number is 1110180080.

If you go to a dealer to buy the O ring, the parts guy may put it on for you.

You have to replace the entire left valve cover. Just replaced mine last night. If you plan on doing the job yourself, purchase the oil filler neck along with the valve cover, valve cover gasket. I had to actually take the cover that the oil filler is attached off the valve cover. Then I used a philips screw driver to unscrew the oil filler neck. I found out that the oil filler neck turns to the left to remove. There is a tab keeping it from turning. You have to remove the filler neck before you remove the valve cover. Standing on the drivers side of the car, pull the oill filler neck towards you and then turn the neck to your left. I took the valve cover apart, it was easier for me.

Hope this help.

I think the OP said the leak is from between the oil filler neck and the valve cover, not from the valve cover gasket.

You described the removal of the oil filler neck so the OP just needs to replace the O ring on the bottom of the neck.

The neck is removed like the filler cap (turning counter-clockwise), once the lock tab on the driver's side is released, no?

Believe it or not the oil filler neck attaches to the valve cover the same way that the oil filler cap attaches to the neck. Use a strap wrench (or channel locks) to rotate the oil filler neck CCW about 90 degrees and it will come right off. I love German Engineering.
