new on the block

Hi from San Diego, CA. Glad to join and learn and perhaps share some of my experiences. In the many years past, I've owned a few German cars myself, Opel, VW, Audi, and BMW. Presently, aside from the 98 SL500(head turner), I have a 96 328ic, 69 Camaro (the no. 1 head turner), 90 Mustang GT convertible, 93 Land Cruiser, 93 Acura, 01 Odyssey, 02 Montero full size and an 85 Toyota Pick Up. Yes a used car lot. all registered and insured. I am an avid do-it-yourselfer and I love cars. I've owned the SL since 2006 and the only maintenance I've done on it other than the oil change is the front brake rotor and pads. I have issues with the safety neutral switch, the starter engages if I push the shift lever to the right. I hear this clunking sound from within the base of the shifter(inside the center console) when I activate the key remote and I am suspecting that switch is still good beacause the starter still engages but something is loose inside (worn bushing? or loose attaching hardware). I want to venture inside the console but I am unsure on how to remove the console cover without breaking anything. Any advise? Thanks in advance.
