'88 300 E, won't idle-- Help!

Hello again... I fully understand the importance of getting a repair manual for my vehicle, but I haven't really had the chance.. Damn thing is a workhorse, but I have also been recently.

I'm working a ton, and driving a lot more, so naturally more problems have arisen.

Here's my situation.

I was driving home late one morning, and I drove over a little pothole. Nothing huge, to make me think that it caused this-- But I basically mention that just for time reference.

Sometime within the next minute the car started laboring and making a hard bumping sound. At first ear-- I thought I might have fucked up a tire or something. So I immediately pull over to a gas station to check 'em. Everything is fine... i get back in the car and notice some pretty rough fumes coming from the engine.

I start to roll down my windows for the ride home, and as I lowered my window my battery and car just DIED with it.

I started it on a jump, but it kept dying when the RPMs would come back down 500.

It was a real bitch getting the car home, and not really being able to stop it. I couldn't take the risk of the RPMs dropping and me leaving me stranded again.

So I am pretty lost. My car starts just fine, but the engine dies whenever I leave it to idle. The engine sounds a little rough, when I'm holding it around 1000.... I've had a few people tell me--- alternator issue, vaccuum, or even a busted cylinder. But the latter two really don't make a lot of sense to me, because-- why did my battery die when I rolled down my window?

I'm going to the mechanic tomorrow. Any ideas you guys have would be greatly appreciated. Help steer my guy in the right direction.

Hmm well first things first check the OVP relay over by the battery. Also you could check your regulator on your alternator. if it running on just battery alot of that could make pefect sense. As much as possible dont "jump" your benz always seems to cause more issues than it helps. Doesnt matter as much for you without alot of electronic ignition stuff but it never helps. I disconnect a terminal and charge the battery puts less stress on the cars old electrical parts.
