I'm in Fresno,CA. If you could take your car to your local dealer, I'm sure that they could evaluate it foir you and give you the evidence and confirmation that you need.
$1000. to replace the shifter? Last time I checked, they were around $500.
On a sideline, early this year one of my customers side-swiped the right side of their C320. I sent them to our local factory authorized body shop. While there, the battery started goind dead, so they put a new battery in. I had just put a new battery in the car in November. The battery they put in kept going dead also. The battery I had put in was still under warranty and so I had a new battery sent over to them. The new battery went dead also. Then the s#@t hit the fan. The insurance company(AAA) wouldn't authorize any more repairs and the body shop said that the alternator was bad(which it wasn't). The customer didn't want to put another dime in the car because the problem did NOT exist before the accident.
After the insurance adjuster and I going back and forth, they agreed to have the car checked out at the dealer. The dealer found that the driver's power seat madule was damaged in the accident and the insurance paid the dealer to replace it.
The morale of this story is to not give up and the squeaky wheel gets oil first.
