some advice on a new possible purchase... e55

Aloha everyone.

I am thinking about getting into the Benz scene. My parents almost bought one but ended up with a 330i bmw.

But anyhow. There's a 99 e55 amg that is for sale at a local major dealer. Not sure exactly how long it's been for sale but I do know they were originally asking 22k for it. Now it's "on sale" for 14k. Here in Hawaii we don't exactly have the best choice for cars. So. I don't want to miss this opportunity to own an amg. However I don't want to rush into something I regret.

So I'm asking for some help to figure out if this is a good choice or should I pass.

The good:
No accidents.
Paint still looks good. White
60k miles.
Good tires.
Car drives very nice. Seems to have great power though with the trac control off it doesn't seem to "roast" tires from a stop. Or even break loose.
I did also test drive a 2002 e430 and it seemed like a real dog compared to the amg in every respect.

The bad:
Power door lock drivers door doesn't work. All others do. Not sure what's wrong.
Dash has a small crack near passenger airbag. Figure easy fix with new dash.
Small rust spot starting on rear drivers side door looks like where they fold the door skin over near the window. I will probably paint the car in the next year or so and have that taken care of. It doesn't look that bad. I didn't notice any rust anywhere else. Even by sunroof.
Slight smell of burning oil from engine compartment. Looks like the valve covers might have a small drip. I'm fairly mechanically inclined. So figure buy new gasket and fix myself.
"rubber" around front windshield is almost now non-existent. Looks like a normal issue with the MB's as I saw this in a few others. Maybe some black silicone can "fix" it.
Black and dark purple leather.... Not exactly my taste.

Sorry for the long boring read.

What do you experts think? There are no other amgs for sale (any years) on this island. And this one does seem to drive nicely. Quiet. Smooth. Etc.
I thank you all in advance for any tips / info.

"Black and dark purple leather" ? Is it Designo edition? That would bring some extra value.
There is pretty strong E55 section on this forum where JOE55 is not only moderator, but also E55 owner. Ask him for tips how to polish the differential.
Go to the section and read, read.
Welcome to the forum.

I don't know if it's a Designo. How would I check? Everything is black leather. Except the middle section of the seats and on the door panels and part of the steering wheel. It's a dark purple. It's not horrible. But... It's purple.

Hmm ok. Upon looking at other Designo's. I'm pretty sure this one is. I remember the original window sticker was in the glove box. Price was 73k

Skip it. Look for an 00-02. The 99 was the last year before the very important face lift. If you can't find one on the island, import it from CA or somewhere else.
