R129 vs R170

I'm considering getting a mid 90's SL or late 90's SLK. 230, SL320, or 500

Comments/thoughts about the relative merits build/quality/maintanance costs between the two. Presume similar mileage. Maybe 20K more miles for the R129.

I have not owned a R129 but I can speak to the R170. I have had my slk230 for a few years now. The hardtop convertible is nice. I drive mine in the winter with snow tires and it does excellent. I have had convertibles before that had both a soft and a hardtop. I found storing of the tops depending on the season to be a pain. You might have more garage space than me so that may not be an issue for you. The slk230 is a very easy engine to work on. I have had no major issues and my car is a daily driver. The gas mileage is about 25 mpg which is nice as well. If you are used to driving fast cars, you might find the slk a bit disappointing at first. It does not throw you back into your seat. I am sure those with a slk32 AMG or slk320 would feel differently. However, if you drive a "regular" vehicle the slk will feel very sport. Acceleration from 0 to 60 is where it lacks just a bit but above 60 the acceleration is very good. You can find more information on the R170 forum. There is an issue with the interior paint rubbing of etc that has been addressed many times there.
Hope this helps. Good luck with your decision. It is a nice one to have!
